Talked a bit on Twitch about this but basically the idea of something digital that ties in with the omg.lol site/vibe. This could be karma/klout/rep/points/tokens or something else you might put on a leaderboard or a profile badge. |

Please do not do this! I want the community to be filled with people who are interested in your services and in supporting you, and who would bring their nice friends in without any monetary incentive. |

I don't personally care about knowing who brought "the most" or "a lot" of people into the community. Creating the system for the rewards/tracking plus the digital assets themselves just adds to the dev backlog, so I don't think it's a good use of dev time. I think if you want to do something that's fun with not much dev overhead then it would be cool if you have a little segment at the beginning of twitch streams where you say thanks for the support by so-and-so for inviting more people, or something like that. I used to support a YouTuber's Patreon and the perk I got was producer credits at the end of the show. I thought that was neat!

I love the sentiment. How do you feel about non-monetary incentives, @tinkerwilco <https://github.com/tinkerwilco>? Like digital badges or virtual doodads or something.

I’m way overdue for launching some kind of referral or affiliate program for omg.lol. I’d love to get some ideas on what people would want out of such a program and how it might work.
I’ve put some thought into it myself, but so far haven’t landed on anything overly specific. From a “guiding principles” perspective, these are the things that matter the most to me:
I’d rather have no program at all than one that creates problems. The last thing I’d want is for people to fill up various spaces out there with referral links or just engage in any kind of aggressive behavior in an attempt to get signups. The broader goal is to simply reward people who introduce the service to others; it’s definitely not for aggressive growth or anything like that.
So, I think the key element here will be a program design that balances rewards against quantity. Maybe something like a sliding scale that disincentivizes more than X number of referrals per month (or something along those lines). Not really sure about specifics.
I’d also love to hear what people would expect to see in terms of rewards. Extra time for addresses? Gift codes? Money? Something else?
Ideally, we’d also have a way to retroactively discover and reward past referrals (this could be as simple as an email to all members with a link where they can say who referred them).
Thanks for sharing your input!
