Windows audio and user manual

I see some people have trouble with Windows audio.
I approached this program with great enthusiasm but now I'm having my doubts.
First the manual bears little relationship to what is actually there. Not of any great help?
Second, for the life of me I can't raise a squeak out of it even though it appears to be running.
I was and still am considering a subscription,so I would appreciate some guidance.
