In the current version of Ubuntu Desktop (24.04.1) there seems to be no way to tell it to "unmount" the target disk if there is already a Debian-based OS on it. It says it is busy and mounted but it does not show up in mount in any form I recognize. To get it to install I had to boot to SystemRescueCD and nuke the partitions with parted. For good measure I followed up with dd to make sure the old partitions were dead. That alone would probably have been enough. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=10000 usually gets everything. I know count = 1 is supposed to work but I have seen that fail, so 10000 it is.
