Localization Documentation

Localization in Dauntless Builder is essentially split into two parts:

  • App Localization - Strings on the website itself
  • Item Data Localization - Item name, description, effects etc.

and is powered by i18next.

The English localization is the source of all truths and is used as a fallback if the current user localization does not contain an entry.

Please do not add translations manually, we are using Crowdin for this, see: https://crowdin.com/project/dauntless-builder

App Localization

These localization entries are handled by one big JSON file per language and can be found in src/json/i18n.

Here is an outtake of the English language file src/json/i18n/en/en.json:

Every entry is generally made up of two parts, an identifier (for instance app-name) and the associated translation (in this case Dauntless Builder). Identifiers can be split up into sub objects and are referenced in by using a dot as a separator (components.build-menu.added-build-to-favorites).

Generally if you want to translate something into another language you'd go into the language file of your language, for instance French would be src/json/i18n/fr/fr.json copy over the identifier and add a different translation.

The translation part can also contain variables which are referenced by surrounding them with two curly braces (see {{name}}).

Item Data Localization

Item data localization is derived from the JSON files in src/json/i18n/???/items. The source language entries are automatically generated from the data yaml files.

Using variables in translation entries

You might notice that this is kinda terrible if the entry contains data like for instance this example:

Instead of translating the strings with the values included you can extract them into the new values field. By doing this the text snippets will usually end up being the same, so it's also recommended to use YAML variables to reduce duplication.

Adding a new language

You read what is written above this and want to start contributing but notice your language is missing?

Adding a new language is fairly easy!

Lets say we're adding support for Sindarin (for sake of the example we'll use si as the language code).

(Keep in mind we're only adding translations here manually as an example, this should generally be done via Crowdin)

First lets start by creating the file src/json/i18n/si/si.json

Next we'll head into src/i18n.ts (note the comments):

And is all you need to do. Now you should be able to select Sindarin in the settings and the title should be replaced with "Dauntless tamo".

Please open a pull request with the new language next, so that I can add it to Crowdin too :)
